A Brief Introduction to TUTCM

 

Established in 1958, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TUTCM) is one of the earliest universities of TCM in China and the only International University of TCM which is approved by State Education Committee (now Ministry of Education) in 1992. TUTCM is also the “Educational Aid Center for Africa and Asia” and “China-ASEAN Educational Training Center” of Ministry of Education (MOE), TCM International Cooperation Center of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM), and Belt & Road Training Center for TCM International Education. Adhering the motto of “strengthening moral education and pursuing academic studies, inheriting and innovating”, TUTCM has developed into a comprehensive university with key program construction and research as the advantage, TCM international education as feature, and covers extensive areas of study, namely as Medicine, Science, Arts, Management, Engineering, Education and etc.

The University has distinguished teaching staff and sufficient resources for students’ internship. Currently it has 2 National Key Disciplines of Acupuncture & Moxibustion andTuinaand TCM Internal Medicine. In 2007, the university was selected into China “Double First-rate” university and Chinese Materia Medica was selected into “Double First-rate” programs. TUTCM is one of the chief commissioner of teaching instructive committee of MOE in both TCM and Medical Humanity, and that of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS). There are three affiliated hospitals and four non-direct affiliated hospitals. The First Teaching Hospital is qualified as National TCM Clinical Research Center, the National Acupuncture Clinical Research Center and the National Provincial Demonstration Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Second Teaching Hospital is the Center for TCM to Treat Rare Disease and has significant advantage in gynecological and encephalopathy diseases. Baokang Hospital and other teaching hospitals have unique treatment features in rehabilitation medicine, orthopedics, community health of TCM, integrative medicine and etc.

The University has extensive international exchanges and cooperation. It aims to train international applicant in clinic with solid theoretical foundation and excellent clinical skills which makes it enjoying a good reputation in many counties. It has established an internationalized training system in which the bachelor degree education is the main part. The system also covers master and doctoral degree education as well as short and long term certificate studies. Every year, there are over 2,000 international students from more than 60 countries or regions that study at TUTCM. Collaborations and exchanges have linked over 70 universities, research institutes and medical centers in 50 countries or regions. The joint education on Clinical Pharmacy with U.K., student exchange programs with famous Japanese and Korean universities, the Japan Branch of School of Chinese Materia Medica, Confucius Institute/classroom in Japan and Thailand, all of which have become act as important international exchanges of Tianjin.

The new campus of TUTCM is under construction, which is located by Tuanbo Lake in Jinghai District, Tianjin. The university is expected to move into the new campus in early 2018. The new campus covers an area of more than 1.7km2with building area of about 600,000m2. The nationally largest museum of TCM, Chinese Medicine Botanical Garden, the nationally most advanced Science and Technology Park of TCM and International Education Center of TCM are all under construction within the new campus which will provide an excellent study and living environment for students.

Degree Students

I. Application Requirements

A. Bachelor’s Program:

·Foreign Students

·Applicant should hold High School graduation certificates or Equivalent Degree or Above; Applicants under 18 shall provide notarized evidence of guardianship.

*Register with program other than TCM requires HSK5 or above; Register with clinical Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy (Joint Education), Chinese Materia Medica, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Preparation, TCM Resources and Development require sound foundation of chemistry; Clinical Pharmacy (Joint Education) besides proficiency of English.

B. Master’s Program (One of the Following):

·Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine

·Bachelor’s Degree of subjects other than medicine but hold TCM or Acupuncturist License in his home country

·Bachelor’s Degree of subjects other than medicine but has completed the designated medical courses

·Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Preparation, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology or other related majors (For application of Pharmacy or related subjects only)

C. Doctoral Program (One of the Following):

·Master’s Degree of TCM-related programs

·Master’s Degree related to Western Medicine, and hold TCM or Acupuncturist License in their home country

·Master’s Degree related to Western Medicine Subjects, and has completed the designated TCM courses

·Master’s Degree in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Preparation, Pharmacognosy,, Pharmacology or other related majors (For application of Pharmacy or related subjects only)

*Applicants for Master’s or Doctoral Degree of Acupuncture & Moxibustion andTuinain English should have Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree of Medicine or of related degrees.

*Overseas Chinese applicants should have the foreign citizenship for at least 4 years, in which the applicant should stay in the county for at least 2 years in the past 4 years.

*Professional Master’s program requires a Bachelor’s degree of Clinical Medicine and HSK4 or above.

II. Degrees Available:

Doctoral, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees, Certificate of Graduation and the English Duplication of above.

III. Fees and Expenses (RMB/Person):

Application Fee: 500

A. Bachelor’s Program

25,000/Ac Yr for courses taught in Chinese;

37,000/Ac Yr for courses taught in English;

37,000/Ac Yr for Clinical Pharmacy (Joint Education) when studying in TUTCM, that of UoN will be charged according to the rate of year in the University of Nottingham (It is approximately 18,063 GBP after discount in 2017).

B. Master’s Program

31,000/Ac Yr for courses taught in Chinese;

41,000/Ac Yr for courses taught in English;

C. Doctoral Program

43,000/Ac Yr for courses taught in Chinese;

53,000/Ac Yr for courses taught in English;

* For Clinical Pharmacy (Joint Education), 1stand 2ndyear will be in China, 3rdand 4thyear will be in U.K., and the 5thyear will be in China for clinical practice.

Bachelor’s Program (4 Years):Chinese Materia Medica, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Preparation, TCM Resources and Development, TCM Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Rehabilitation Treatment, Food Sanitation and Nutrition, Medical Experiment Techniques, Medical Information Engineering, Nursing, Applied Psychology, Chinese Language, Teaching Chinese as A Foreign Language, Marketing, Labor and Social Security, Public Services Administration, Social Sports Guidance and Management.

Master’s Program (3 Years):Theories of TCM, TCM Clinical Basics, TCM History, TCM Prescriptions, TCM Diagnostics, TCM Internal Medicine, TCM External Diseases, TCM Orthopaedics and Traumatology, TCM Gynecology, TCM Pediatrics, TCMOphthalmologyandOtolaryngoloy, Basics of Integration of TCM and Western Medicine, Clinical Science of IntegrativeMedicine,Acupuncture & Moxibustion andTuina*,Chinese Materia Medica*and etc.

V. Language of Instruction:Chinese orEnglish (Majors with *)

*The courses of Clinical Pharmacy (Joint Education) include bilingual courses in China and English courses in U.K. The admission requires an overall score of IELTS no less than 6.5 and no less than 6.0 in each section. If the applicant has an overall score of IELTS no less than 6.0 and no less than 5.0 in each section, after a paid 10-week English enhancement training, the applicant can be admitted. If the applicant fails the English test in the 2ndyear, the applicant cannot continue with the study in U.K., and has to extend the year of schooling up to two years. Those who fail to meet the overseas study requirement or are rejected by UoN due to incompetent performance will be ordered to quit school.

VII. General Procedures for foreign applicants:

A.The application documents will be examined by theuniversity, and the students should pay application fee upon the approval of their documents ( remittance receipts are needed).

B.Theuniversity sends Admission Notice and JW202 Form (Visa Application for Study in China).

C.The applicants should carry out thephysical examination at designated hospital and apply X1 or X2 visa at Chinese embassy.

D.Report to the university immediately after entry into China, verify/re-do physical examination and apply for a residence permit within 30 days.
